Why this website exists
Back pain is one of the most common reasons adults see a doctor, and one of the most heavily marketed-to conditions there is. The market that has grown around it — braces, inversion tables, traction units, massagers, percussion guns — runs from genuinely useful to outright cynical, and the advertising rarely helps a reader tell which is which. Back Journal exists to look at that plainly: what a device is designed to do, what has actually been studied, and where the honest limits sit.
We are a consumer information website. We do not design, manufacture, sell, ship or service any product, and we are not a clinic. Nobody here practises medicine, and nothing we publish is a diagnosis or a treatment plan.
The product category we cover
Our coverage focuses on at-home devices marketed for lower-back pain, sciatica and general spinal stiffness — traction and decompression units, heat and massage devices, and the combinations of the three that have become common. This is a category where careful expectation-setting is not optional, because the downside of getting it wrong is not just wasted money. A consumer wellness device is not a medical device. It does not diagnose anything, it does not replace physiotherapy or prescribed treatment, and for some conditions — fractures, significant osteoporosis, spinal hardware, recent surgery — traction is not appropriate at all. Where research exists it usually studies a therapy in a clinical setting rather than a particular product sold for home use, and we say so rather than letting a study stand in as proof.

Claims we will not make
No invented statistics, no fabricated customer counts, no countdown timers and no manufactured stock scarcity. Where we quote a rating we say who published it and that we have not audited it. We never claim a device cures, treats or reverses a condition.
How we frame products
Products are described in terms of what they are designed to do, with the caveats attached. We use words like “may” and “varies” where those are the honest words, even when a stronger one would convert better.
Research, cited and bounded
When we reference a study we link it, and we state what it actually tested. A trial of clinical decompression equipment is not evidence about a consumer product, and we will not present it as though it were.
Safety notes stay visible
Contraindications, the advice to speak to a clinician first, and the red-flag symptoms that need urgent attention sit in the body of the page — not only in the small print at the bottom.
Advertising, disclosed up front
Our homepage article is a paid advertorial and is labelled as one at the very top of the page, above the header, before any content. Nothing about that arrangement is buried in a footnote.
Corrections
If something we publish is inaccurate or has gone out of date, write to us and we will review it. Specifications, pricing and return terms change often; we would rather fix a page than defend it.
